DESCRIPTION

The exhibition Verborgen kapel in ere hersteld (Hidden chapel in hounor restored) tells the story of a centuries-old chapel in Roosbeek that, over time,
became entirely enclosed by later extensions of the now deconsecrated Saint Anne’s Church. What was once an
autonomous sacred space gradually deteriorated into a storage room, almost disappearing from collective memory.

The scenographic approach aimed to make the original chapel volume visible once again and to revalue it as a ‘treasury’ within the museum church. In the design, the modest chapel volume was repositioned at the centre of the
nave, redirecting the visitor’s first gaze away from the choir and towards the chapel itself. Visitors could experience the space around and through the chapel. Its slightly rotated position subtly reveals the location of the historic chapel, hidden behind a door to the left of the choir.

The scenography was constructed from modular, reusable elements that can be easily dismantled and reconfigured. This approach served as an exploration of sustainable exhibition construction, with attention to material conscious-ness and circular principles.

At the exhibition opening, a musical intermezzo was performed by A Nocte Temporis, the ensemble of Reinoud Van Mechelen, adding an additional sensory and atmospheric layer to the experience.

The exhibtion was organised by HannaH Acteum vzw and Kerkfabriek Heilige Maria Boutersem in context of Open Monumentendag 2025
