DESCRIPTION

‘Grotto’ is a place in the Buda factory in Kortrijk where artists, architects, musicians, writers… can retreat to in all security. An inspiring workspace, where they can create things that they
could never imagine in their daily work environment. They can then exhibit the exhibit in Buda’s exhibition hall.In addition to being a place for artists, the ‘Grotto’ is also a spatial object in the entrance hall designed by 51N4E, intended as a unique recognition point for the visitors of the Buda Factory.

The ‘Grotto’ is a playful translation of the ‘allegory of the cave’, written by the Greek philosopher Plato. The basic construction is made up entirely of 10 x 10 cm of 10 by 10 cm and has ‘fork-like’ corner joints which are filled with different surfaces of wooden plate material.

‘Grotto’ consists of three different levels. The lower part is open and forms the passage through which visitors make their way to the entrance of the Buda factory. The second level is the residence of the temporary resident and has a closed cave-like form. The highest level is an open space with a visual view of the outside world and the artist can relax and enjoy himself without being seen from the outside.
