DESCRIPTION
Unravel is an artistic-architectural, labyrinth-like installation that takes the visitor on a path representing life enabling him to make certain choices. An essential requirement for this is that the visitor enters into a dialogue with the design. By creating a narrative environment in which the visitor can let his imagination run wild, he is given a unique opportunity to connect with the thoughts, emotions, images or stories that the design elicits from him. The visitor can then translate this kind of ‘image thinking’ into new insights or behaviour. They can give his life (new) direction. They allow the visitor to make certain choices and unravel situations while life continues on its way [‘unravels’]. The design makes maximum use of the visitor’s imagination by elaborating a layered and abstract story concept. The choice of a labyrinth as a metaphor makes different storylines possible. It also makes the abstract language of forms more legible for the visitor without undermining his imagination.
The design responds to current as well as future challenges of a changing society. The design forces the visitor consciously or unconsciously to (self)reflect. It creates an imagined reality in which the visitor can question his place in society and broaden his view of reality. It invites him not to look for answers in false realities. He is free to implement his new insights and behaviours.
On the theme of sustainability, the use of no-nonsense, solid and reusable basic materials such as rebar and rope are used. Any excess of different materials is avoided. The modular construction of the design facilitates the possibility to reuse, it allows for single-trip transportation of the stackable parts, therefore minimising the impact on the environment.
